This spring, I traveled to southwest Florida where my namesake hurricane had made landfall the previous October. As I navigated pools of standing water and rubble-strewn streets, I noted the contrast between the storm’s lingering aftereffects and the manicured luxury to which this area usually aspired. Yet even standing within the direct footprint of climate change, I could not shake a sense of incompleteness—that I was somehow no closer to understanding the full forces at play

As summer comes to a close, CREW’s second annual Climate Preparedness Week is on the horizon--now less than 2-months away. Climate Preparedness Week 2022, held September 24-30th, is going to be a culmination of months of worth of hard work. We at CREW are proud to join a strong group of housing and climate groups in calling for increased government support in climate resilience and affordable housing. Advocates for these causes gathered at yesterday’s Joint Committee on Revenue hearing to testify for legislation that would double the deeds excise tax on real estate sales. This tax would provide over $150 million per year and put money into both climate resilience and affordable housing.

Earlier this month we were thrilled to host an interfaith summit on “Climate Change, Faith, and Vulnerability” with partners at Old South Church in Boston.

Last weekend, we were pleased to partner with committed volunteers from The Haiti Initiative to host a presentation and community conversation on climate change in the Port neighborhood of Cambridge. We discussed why the climate is changing, how the impacts are being felt in Cambridge, and what we can do to prepare for increases in extreme heat and flooding.
